Cutting down on kitchen waste sounds great in theory, but most of us have tried and given up on at least one eco swap that just didn’t fit real life. Here are a few that genuinely hold up once the novelty wears off.
Bring your own containers to the bulk bins
This is the easiest win in the whole list. Rice, flours, grains, nuts and dried fruit all come from our bulk bins, and you can bring your own jars or containers instead of taking home another bag of packaging. Buy exactly what you need, nothing more.
Swap disposable cleaning products for refillable ones
Eco cleaning brands like Ecostore and Earthwise are designed to be topped up rather than thrown out. It’s a small habit change that adds up fast if your household gets through a lot of spray bottles.
Rethink your period products
Menstrual cups from brands like Lunette or MyCup last for years and replace hundreds of single-use products over that time. It’s one of the biggest waste reductions you can make without changing much about your routine.
Choose soap nuts or bar soap over bottled options
Bar soap and soap nuts skip the plastic bottle entirely and tend to last longer than you’d expect. They’re an easy first step if you’re not ready to overhaul your whole bathroom cabinet yet.
Start small and let it build
You don’t need to change everything on the same weekend. Pick one swap, get comfortable with it, then add another. That’s how a lower-waste kitchen actually sticks around instead of fading out by March.
