Natural skincare has a reputation for being a bit precious, but the reasons people switch are usually pretty practical once you look past the marketing.
Fewer ingredients you can’t pronounce
Conventional skincare often relies on synthetic fragrances, preservatives and fillers to hit a price point. Natural ranges like Dr Hauschka, Antipodes and Trilogy tend to build formulas around fewer, more recognisable ingredients, which matters if your skin reacts easily.
Better for sensitive skin
If you’ve ever broken out after trying a new product, the culprit is often a synthetic fragrance or a harsh preservative rather than the “active” ingredient being advertised. Natural formulations don’t automatically solve this, but they cut out a lot of the usual offenders.
What goes on your skin goes somewhere
Skin absorbs a surprising amount of what you put on it. Choosing plant-based oils and butters over synthetic alternatives is one small way to reduce your overall exposure to ingredients you’d rather avoid.
It’s kinder to the water it washes into
Natural formulations tend to break down more easily once they’re rinsed away, which matters if you’re already thinking about your household’s environmental footprint.
Give it a proper trial
Natural skincare can behave differently to what you’re used to, some products don’t lather the same way, or absorb a little slower. Give a new routine two to three weeks before deciding it’s not for you.
